Nurbak Batulla was born in Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. In his pieces, he reflects on the topic of the Tatar identity. The style of the dancer mostly resembles physical theatre. For Nurbak, movement is a means to understanding the body and consciousness. The priority is not the result but the process. In his performances, Nurbak trains his “instruments” — the body, the voice and the consciousness in such a way that he (the artist) becomes a conductor between the world of ideas and the audience.

"My field of interest is the search for a body language. This search is connected with my native language — Tatar. It is now on the verge of extinction. Until I was 7 years old, I did not speak Russian and, therefore, thought in Tatar. From age 7, I started speaking Russian, and after receiving education, I started thinking in Russian.
Now, I am trying to return to thinking in my native language through my creative search, and even go further - returning to thinking in body language because people move and dance a bit more than they speak."
For Nurbak, performance is what lies in-between ritual and theatre.

Nurbak has the desire to share his knowledge generously, because his teachers were generous to him.
